How to transition your dog to Happy Howl dog food

Your go-to guide on transitioning from wet food, kibble, or home-cooked meals to Happy Howl dog food

You’ve ordered your first batch of Happy Howl. Your pupper is excited. They just can’t wait to try something new and it smells oh-so-good to boot. You’re even excited yourself! So why not just make your best pal happy by giving them their whole meal portion of Happy Howl right now and watch them smile like it’s treat o’clock?

Well, actually – it could be a lot like that. Because, depending on what kind of diet your dog is used to, this might just be the way to go about it. But remember, it’s not an exact science, and every dog is different (especially our fuzzy pals with tummy issues, allergies, etc) so use your senses when it comes to what’s best for your pup.

Now, let’s dive in and find out more!

What does it mean to transition, and why do we do it?

Have you ever tried a Keto diet or a juice cleanse and your stomach just waged all-out war on you? Ok maybe that’s an exaggeration. But it can be stressful on your dog’s tummy if you switch up their meal without easing into the new food. Especially for dogs who eat an all-kibble diet everyday. That’s why we generally recommend using a multi-day transition from the old food to their new Happy Howl meals, based on the American Kennel Club’s recommended transition guide

How to transition from kibble to Happy Howl dog food

Here’s our 5-day transition guide for switching off of an all-kibble diet:

  • Day 1: 75% kibble mixed with 25% Happy Howl
  • Day 2: 50% kibble mixed with 50% Happy Howl
  • Day 3-4: 25% kibble mixed with 75% Happy Howl
  • Day 5 and beyond: 100% Happy Howl (hooray!)

How to transition from wet food or home-cooked food to Happy Howl dog food

Here’s our standard 4-day transition guide:

  • Day 1-2: 50% old food mixed with 50% Happy Howl
  • Day 2-3: 25% old food mixed with 75% Happy Howl
  • Day 4 and beyond: 100% Happy Howl (hooray!)

Make sure to monitor your dog’s poop and their personality

With any dog food transition, it’s best to go slow and keep a close eye on your best pal, just in case. When switching to Happy Howl, you’re ensuring your pup is getting a complete and balanced healthy & nutritious meal. So they should be looking happier and livelier each day they’re eating their new food. But if for any reason they are showing signs that say otherwise – like acting lethargic, having abnormal poops multiple times, or otherwise unusual activity; slow down the transition to avoid any upset tummies along the way.
